Requa Inn

Welcome to

Requa Inn

RequaInn.com

Welcome to the Historic Requa (pronounced RECK-wah) Inn in the village of Requa, California. A hotel has been operating on this site almost continuously since the 1880s.

Today’s Requa Inn combines the comfort and friendliness of a casual Inn with the privacy and personal service of a small hotel. We cater to people who appreciate old things (ourselves included), who love the great outdoors, and who walk softly upon the earth; to people who come from all corners of the world to pay homage to ancient redwoods and the International Biosphere Reserve that protects them.

Sincerely yours,
Janet Wortman
Inn Keeper,

The Building

You are staying in a building that is over 100 years old — practically new to Europeans, but ancient for the west coast of North America. The age of the Inn gives it charm and character as well as a few quirks that may require your patience.

  • Bathrooms: We have tired to maintain an early 20th century style in many of our bathrooms. The lavatories, tubs and faucets in many rooms are historic or reproductions. In our claw-foot tubs with showers, please put the shower curtains inside the tub and pull them completely closed to avoid flooding the room.
  • Kitchen: There’s a microwave and small guest refrigerator for your use. As we’re a commercial kitchen, we’re not set up to be open to all kinds of use. Because our dishes must go through the commercial dishwasher to be sanitized, we’ll handle the dishwashing. Simply stack your dirty dishes on the tray in the dining room and we’ll handle the dishwashing. (And don’t feel guilty about this. It’s okay. Really.)
  • Electrical Outlets: We’ve added dozens of outlets, but they are still not as plentiful as you might like due to the difficulty of stringing electrical wire in our old redwood walls. We can provide you with a plug strip if you need more outlets. Just ask at the desk.
  • Heating & Cooling: The Inn does not have central heat. On chilly days, we heat the downstairs with the fireplace, and you have an electric heater in your room. Most rooms now have baseboard electric heaters with a simple dial to control the setting. A few rooms have electric radiators. They work best if you set them on low and leave them on while you are in the room. Please try to remember to turn the heater off when you go out for the day.
  • We do not have air conditioning at the Requa Inn. On our rare 80-degree days, ceiling fans are usually sufficient. Ask us for an additional fan if you are too warm.
  • Walls: If these walls could talk, well… wouldn’t that be interesting? The Requa Inn is built of solid redwood, with redwood sawdust as insulation in the walls. This may have been an economical method of construction in 1914, but we can tell you sawdust is a very poor deadener of sound. If you have a deep, dark secret, do not share it with your companion while staying here. People in adjacent rooms will hear all about it. Apparently this did not matter to hotel guests in 1914, and we apologize for our inability to do anything about our thin walls today.
  • Windows: Feel free to open your windows. The air here is amazingly clean and fresh. We don’t have many insects (thanks to our bats), but in the summer we provide a small screen that fits in the window opening to prevent flies or other bugs from invading your room.
  • Spiders: Spiders thrive here where we use no chemical pesticides or herbicides. If you’re afraid of spiders and you have one in your room, let us know. We’ll take it outside.
  • Bats: Bats thrive here too.

Catering for Events

Catering services are available for meetings and banquets in the hotel. Please dial 707-482-1425 to make arrangements.

Check-In/Check-Out

Check-in time is 4 p.m. Check-out time is 11 a.m.

Children

Our goal at the Requa Inn is to provide a peaceful retreat to relax and unwind. Therefore, we’re maintaining the “no babies, no toddlers, please” policy at the Inn for guests.

Our Hot Tub in the backyard is open 24 hours a day. Instructions on how to remove and replace the Hot Tub’s cover and operate the controls are available at the Front Desk. Please also read the precautions for your safety.

Complimentary Coffee

Complimentary coffee is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. If you would like coffee any other time just ask the Front Desk and we will be happy to make you a fresh pot. Fresh milk and cream can (usually) be found in the small fridge near the coffee bar before 8 a.m. Need your joe super early? Just let us know the night before and the coffee start-time can be earlier by request. Need decaf? Let us know and we’ll make you some. We take coffee seriously around here, and only serve the local, organic and fair trade stuff.

Breakfast

The dining room is open and a full breakfast menu is offered from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. during our high season, and 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. during our off season.

Conference Rooms

Conference rooms accommodating up to 45 people are available for business meetings and other events. For information or to make reservations, please contact the Front Desk.

Credit Cards

For your convenience we accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards.

Dinner

April 1-October 31st: We offer an amazing dinner at 7 p.m. — we love food at the Requa Inn. We are continuously improving our dinner service hours and offerings to get it just right for the Inn and our guests. Most meals feature nearly 100% local and organic produce and meats, and of course they are absolutely fresh and delicious. We serve family-style, which turns each night to a lovely, warm dinner party in the dining room.

We’re happy to make modifications for dietary needs, please just let us know as soon as possible if you need a major substitution — and then let your server know as well.

November 1-March 31st: We do not offer dinner, due to our small staff and wanting to give you, our most honored guests, the best that we can, there are other options in the area — stop by the Front Desk and we’ll give you an updated list of restaurants.

Please stay tuned to the Requa Inn website for updates about our dinner events including Winemaker and Beer Maker Dinner series, or sign up at the Front Desk to join the mailing list.

Drinks

If you would like to buy a soda, beer or wine ask the Front Desk. Ask us to see our wine list (we’ve been told it’s the best in Del Norte County). Also feel free to bring your own beverages. We don’t mind.

Emergencies

In case of a police, fire or ambulance emergency, dial 911. If your cell phone doesn’t have reception, please come ask us and we would be happy to let you use our cell phones. For emergencies relating to the Inn, dial 707-954-6225.

Energy Conservation

A watt or BTU saved is one that does not have to be generated, and one that can’t put greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. We thank you for joining us in conserving energy.

This old building, with its uninsulated solid redwood walls and leaky windows can hardly be considered “green”, but we are taking some small steps to reduce our Bigfoot-sized carbon footprint.

  • Carbon Credits: We buy carbon credits from The Carbon Farmer, a Canadian business run by guests of the Inn, to offset our annual CO2 emissions. Check out TheCarbonFarmer.ca for a fascinating look at a new green business concept.
  • Blue Sky: We’re participating in Pacific Power’s Blue Sky Program, which allows customers to buy energy from renewable sources. As a result, some of our electricity is produced by solar, wind and geothermal sources.

Forget Something?

As a courtesy to our guests, we are happy to provide complimentary personal items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and razors.

Front Desk

The Front Desk is open 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Please plan to get what you need from the Front Desk before staff goes home for the night. If you have an emergency after hours, ring the bell on the Front Desk (it rings to our apartment). If you plan to be out later than 10 p.m, be sure you have the combination to the lock at the top of the outside staircase (425). Guests who forget it have to contend with a grumpy Jan when they ring the doorbell to get in. (I try not to be grumpy, but my face just looks like that after 10 p.m.)

In the winter when things slow down, Jan and Marty are up the hill two minutes away with lots of cameras on the Inn — give them a call at 707-954-6225 if you need any assistance.

The Grounds

  • Riverfront: By the stop sign in front of the Inn, you’ll see steps to the riverfront where you’ll find benches and a gazebo. It’s a glorious place to spend time soaking up nature. If you take food with you, please pack out what you take. If we were to leave a trash can there, the bears and raccoons would have a party every night with the garbage. With advance notice, and a little work on your part, a campfire can be built at the gazebo.
  • Dogs: Our apologies for the stray dogs or cats that may follow you to the riverfront or try and get into your car with you in the parking lot. Many returning guests met our Grandmother’s dog, Wo-Ge, who served as a tour guide on walks to the beach. If you missed him, there are books in the living room featuring this great dog. Wo-ge’s now in dog heaven and we wish we could say all of the neighborhood dogs were well-trained tour guides, but we can’t, so please be careful if walking up the hill.
  • Barking at night. We wish we could control our neighbor’s dogs, and frankly, if you hear barking at night it most likely means a bear or mountain lion is nearby. Complimentary earplugs are available at the Front Desk.
  • Children: Our goal at the Requa Inn is to provide a peaceful retreat to relax and unwind. We’re maintaining the “no babies, no toddlers, please” policy at the Inn for guests, in order to keep kid noise to a minimum.

Hair Dryers

We’ve provided a hair dryer in every room. Look in the vanity drawers if yours is not in plain sight.

Hot Tub

Our Hot Tub in the backyard is open 24 hours a day. There are no lifeguards on duty, and children are not permitted in the Hot Tub area unless accompanied by an adult. Instructions on how to remove and replace the Hot Tub’s cover and operate the controls are available at the Front Desk. Please also read the precautions for your safety.

  • Reservations: If you want to reserve the Hot Tub for your exclusive use at a specific time, please use the whiteboard near room 12 to note your reservation. Each room is limited to 30 minutes per day of reserved Hot Tub time.
  • Spa Towels: Towels are located in a dresser by room 6.
  • Bathing Suits: Are optional. (It’s a California thing.)
  • Shoes: Wear ‘em. The path to the Hot Tub is gravel. Ouch!

Ice

If you need ice, ask the Front Desk. We will be happy to get you a bucket of ice.

Internet Access

We are pleased to offer complimentary Wi-Fi in all our guest rooms. User id is requaguests. You will receive directions and the password on your brief check-in paper. We ask that you please refrain from large data usage. This means consuming nothing with an audio or video stream.

Keys

If you lose your keys, please notify the Front Desk immediately. We will gladly provide you with a replacement upon presentation of photo identification. If your ID is locked in your room, hotel staff will assist you in retrieving it. We will ask you for your room key when you check out just to be sure we retrieve all keys. Our locks are one-of-a-kind, and keys are difficult to replace.

Library

Books are one of life’s great joys. Please enjoy ours. We’re also happy to trade books in some cases – the paperback you’ve finished for one of ours – but please ask before making the trade. Some of our paperbacks are swap fodder; others are like old friends. Some books are incredible treasures — relevant information about the area. Please leave these for other guests to enjoy.

Linens

  • Down: All of our rooms have down pillows and comforters. Even in July, you’ll enjoy the snuggly warmth of down. If down doesn’t agree with you, we’ve provided poly-fill pillows and extra blankets in your closet, wardrobe, dresser or cedar chest.
  • Shams: Our decorative pillow shams have been specially treated with an invisible purple dye that will come off on your face if you sleep on them. Please don’t use them as your pillow. We can’t launder the covers for every guests as we do the pillow slips. We provide extra pillows in every room. Please use those instead.
  • Towels: If you’re happy to use a towel more than one day, please hang it up in your bathroom with our thanks for conserving. If you want fresh towels and bath linens, just throw the used ones on the floor and we’ll replace them with fresh. Guests who hang wet towels on the posts of our four-poster beds will be dragged out and publicly flogged at sunrise.
  • Paper Towels: We try to keep paper towels in each room. Please use them if you need to wipe up a spill, clean your muddy boots, remove mascara, or wash your car. Yes, guests have actually used our linens to do all of these things, and some stains are impossible to remove.

Lions & Tigers & Bears (Oh My!)

We don’t have tigers, but mountain lions and black bears visit the Requa Hill frequently. If our neighborhood dogs are barking at night, you can be sure a large predator is in the vicinity.

Lobby

The Lobby is unlocked from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. with an occasional closure midday when we don’t have anyone to mind the desk. If the door is locked, please use the second story entrance. You are free to come and go at any time, and we hope you will think of the Lobby area as your personal living space while you are here. If you are the last person up at night, don’t worry about the lights or the fireplace. We make the rounds after everyone has gone to bed to shut things down.

Lost & Found

Please dial 707-482-1425 to contact the Front Desk regarding any items you may have lost or found. Requa Inn is not responsible for lost items. Due to our remote location and having to pay staff to take the lost items to the post office, we do charge a $35 handling fee plus the cost of postage to return your left items.

Luggage Assistance

Our helpful staff will be happy to assist you with your luggage. Please contact the Front Desk.

Mail, Postage Stamps

Mail may be dropped off or picked up at the Front Desk, and postage stamps may be purchased there at the current postal rate.

Messages

The Front Desk will notify you if any messages have been left for you.

Movies

There’s a basket of DVDs at the top stairs dresser for you to borrow and watch on your laptop. We trust you to return them.

Pets

Pets are not permitted. The Front Desk will gladly assist you in making alternate arrangements for your pet.

Picnics

When we are not serving dinner you’re welcome to bring take-away or deli foods to eat in our dinning room. We’re happy to provide dishes and silver wear. During dinner service, we do have a corking fee of $15 for wine not purchased at the Inn.

Recycling

We recycle everything we can – aluminum cans, glass, plastic, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, tin cans, paper, plastic bags, etc. But you don’t need to worry about it. We sort through the trash as we dispose of it.

Restaurants

At the Front Desk, you’ll find a list of local and area restaurants. We’re also happy to make a recommendation based on your menu preferences.

Reservations

Please contact the Front Desk or call 707-482-1425 for future individual or group reservations, or to reserve conference rooms.

Smoking Policy & Other Flames

All of our rooms are smoke-free. If you want to smoke, please step outside on either the front or back porch where we keep ashtrays for our friends who smoke. Candles, incense and flames of any sort are also taboo here. When it comes to fire, we are skittish as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.

Telephone

  • Emergency (Police, fire or ambulance): Dial 911.
  • Emergency (Requa Inn-related): Dial 707-945-6225.
  • Front Desk: Dial 707-482-1425. Front Desk is open from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

If you need to make a phone call and you don’t have reception, please come ask us and we would be happy to let you use our cell phones.

Water Supply & Water Conservation

Our water comes from a spring a few hundred feet up Requa Hill. We think it is more delicious than bottled water. The Requa Inn has its own state-certified water treatment process.

We are able to store 2500 gallons of spring water in our system. Most North Americans use 80 to 100 gallons of water each per day, counting kitchen support. The Inn holds 28 people at peak usage, so we are cutting it close. We appreciate your conservation. You don’t have to be miserly with your usage (we want you to take that long, steamy bubble bath), but do alert us if your toilet is running or your sink faucet won’t shut off. These leaks can result in hundreds of gallons of lost water.

Your Innkeepers

Your innkeepers are Janet, her daughter Geneva Wiki, and son Thomas, who is also the Executive Chef. Jan, Geneva and Thomas are Yurok Tribal members, whose family has lived at the village of Requa since the beginning of time. The family purchased the Inn in 2010 and are happy to be home!

Having raised their children, Geneva and Thomas, in Oregon, Jan and Marty left their careers — Jan in finance and mortgages and Marty as the Maintenance Director of a Coca-Cola plant — and moved to Del Norte County in 2004. The Two served in similar positions in Del Norte County. Marty often says, “the worst day at Requa is better than the very best day in Beaverton.”

The Requa Inn is the perfect culmination of the two’s passions and skills. Jan and Marty are often asked to cater for large family and community gatherings, The two are regular interior design consultants for friends and family, and both love hosting guests. Jan is also a trained “spiritual director” and ordained minister who’s officiated several weddings (including Geneva and Reweti’s). Geneva and Reweti are “support providers” to Marty and Jan. Reweti is a Maori (indigenous New Zealander) who first came to the redwood forest in 2004 from Wellington, New Zealand, for what was supposed to be a 10-day visit with Geneva at Requa.

Currently, the Wiki family is living in Crescent City. The “YaYa” innkeeper, Jan, will be happy to delight you with endless pictures and stories of her three granddaughters and wonderful twin grandsons.

Safety & Security

Traveler Safety

  • Do not admit anyone into your room without first verifying his or her identity. If you are unsure of someone claiming to be a hotel employee, call the Front Desk for verification before allowing entry.
  • Hotel staff members will never call your room and ask for credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Please notify the Front Desk if you receive such a call.
  • Do not leave cash or other valuables in your room or vehicle.
  • Always use all locking devices on the door. Before leaving your room, double check that windows and door are all securely locked.
  • Keep your room key card with you at all times. Do not leave it unattended in your room, by the Hot Tub or elsewhere.
  • Report any suspicious activity that you observe to the management.

Fire Safety

  • If you hear an alarm or smell smoke, act immediately; don’t just investigate.
  • To report a fire, dial 911. Be sure to give your room number. Next, call the Front Desk by dialing 0.
  • Leave your room. Proceed quickly but calmly. Do not panic.

Earthquake Safety

If you feel any shaking:

  • Drop, cover and hold on: drop down to the floor as soon as you perceive an earthquake has started; drop down before the earthquake drops you down. Then seek shelter under a desk or table. Crouch down on your knees so that you can move with the table. Hold on to the table leg(s) so you can keep the table over you.
  • If there is no nearby desk or table, sit on the floor against an inside wall, away from windows, tall furniture or bookcases. Draw up your knees, bend your head toward your knees. Protect your head and neck with your arms.
  • Go outside once the shaking stops. Make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes before leaving the building. If possible take valuables and medications. Avoid touching downed power lines. If access to exit doors is blocked by earthquake damage, wait for a rescue team.

Tsunami Safety

If you are at the beach or near the ocean and you feel the ground shake or see rapidly rising or falling coastal water levels, move immediately to higher ground and stay there until local authorities say it is safe to return. DO NOT wait for a warning to be announced. If the tsunami is caused by a remote earthquake or volcanic eruption, you will be alerted by a siren, radio or television broadcasts, local first responders and/or an alarm at the hotel.

Often the first wave may not be the largest. The danger from a tsunami can last up to 12 hours after the arrival of the first wave. Tsunamis move faster than a person can run, and can be 30 feet high or higher; sometimes much higher. Never stay near shore to watch a tsunami come in.
