Safety & Security
Traveler Safety Tips
- Keep the door securely closed whenever you are in your room, and use all of the locking devices provided.
- Don’t answer the door to your hotel room without verifying who is there. If a person claims to be an employee, call the Front Desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose. It is standard procedure for hotel staff to contact you first before sending an employee to your room.
- Hotel staff members will never call your room and ask for credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Please notify the Front Desk if you receive such a call.
- Do not display large amounts of cash in public. Do not leave cash or other valuables lying out in your room or vehicle. The Beachfront Inn provides a complimentary safe at the Front Desk. We advise you to use it.
- When returning to the hotel late in the evening, be observant and look around before entering the parking area and before leaving your vehicle.
- If you are traveling with children you must be sure that they have adult supervision at all times. It is not advisable to leave a child under the age of 14 alone inside of a hotel room.
- No child under the age of 14 is allowed to use the pool facilities unattended. This is for the safety of the child and other guests of our hotel who will be using the pool. Excessive horseplay and loud noise is not acceptable at any time!
- Keep your room key card with you at all times. Do not leave it unattended in your room, by the swimming pool or elsewhere.
- Please report any suspicious activity that you observe to the management.
Fire Safety
- If you hear an alarm, ACT, don’t simply wait to investigate later.
- If there is a fire in your room, get out and close the door. Alert your neighbors. Once out report the fire to the hotel staff right away!
- In an emergency it is advisable to leave your room if you can. In the case of fire, first feel your door to see if it is hot. If it is cool to the touch, open it slowly. If there is no dense smoke go to the nearest exit. Crawl along the floor if there is smoke; that is where the fresher air will be located. Take your keys so you can go back to your room if you can’t get to an exit. Pull the nearest fire alarm if possible. Proceed quickly but calmly.
- If your door is hot, DO NOT OPEN IT. Your room may be the safest place to be. Seal all cracks with wet towels and shut off fans and the air conditioner. Call the Fire Department and the Front Desk from your room phone if it is functioning, or from a cell phone. Fill your bathtub with water. Signal for help from your window and wait patiently for rescue to come. Do not break the window or jump from it.
Earthquake Safety
If you feel any shaking:
- Drop, cover and hold on: drop down to the floor as soon as you perceive an earthquake has started — drop down before the earthquake drops you down. Then seek shelter under a desk or table. Crouch down on your knees so that you can move with the table. Hold on to the table leg(s) so you can keep the table over you.
- If there is no nearby desk or table: sit on the floor against an inside wall, away from windows, tall furniture or bookcases. Draw up your knees, bend your head toward your knees. Protect your head and neck with your arms.
- Go outside once the shaking stops. Make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes before leaving the building. If possible take valuables, medications and important identification papers you may need (foreign travelers please take note). Avoid touching downed power lines. If access to exit doors is blocked by earthquake damage, wait for a rescue team.
Beach/Ocean Safety
THE OCEAN IS COOL, be careful not to get too cold while in the water, there is a possibility of leg and arm cramping.
THE OCEAN FLOOR IS NOT EVEN so please be careful of sudden deep depressions. Don’t go out into the water over your knees to be safe. Maintain your footing, the waves may cause the water to rise to your waist. Never swim or wade alone!
DON’T PANIC IF YOU ARE BEING PULLED OFFSHORE, try to relax and move parallel to the beach, you will be pushed back into shore. Call for help if you are in trouble.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RESCUE SOMEONE unless you are trained, Summon Emergency Personnel instead.
BEWARE OF LOGS ON THE BEACH. The ocean waves can move these giants without warning, please keep a close watch on your children when playing around them, they can do great harm.
AVOID BREAKING GLASS ON THE BEACH or leaving litter on the beach. A clean beach is a safe beach.
NEVER FAKE ACTIONS OF DISTRESS.
CITY ORDINANCES PROHIBIT LITTERING the beach & defacing of any public property & equipment. They also may prohibit the launching of any floating objects or devices into the surf. (inner tubes, etc.) Check with local police.
Tsunami Safety
The Oregon Coast is subject to the hazards of tsunamis (formerly called tidal waves) and earthquakes. Although these occurrences are quite rare, we would like you to please educate yourself by reading this information, and take recommended precautions just in case such a rare event does occur.
A tsunami is a series of sea waves caused by an underwater earthquake. As tsunamis enter shallow water near land they increase in height and can cause great loss of life and property. Wave heights of 20 to 40 feet at the shoreline have been recorded along the Pacific.
Our coastline can be affected by two distinct types of tsunamis:
THE FIRST TYPE IS CALLED A DISTANT TSUNAMI. It is created by a large earthquake occurring elsewhere in the Pacific Ocean basin. Earthquakes in Japan, Chile and Alaska have been responsible for generating tsunamis that have struck the Oregon coast in the past. Usually these take several hours to reach our coast.
Evacuation orders and the approximate arrival time of tsunamis will be issued by local emergency officials. Please cooperate with them, and follow their directives. If a verbal warning to evacuate is not given, a three (3) minute wailing siren, going up and down every five (5) seconds, will also signal an evacuation order. It is best to quickly leave the motel by car by taking a right turn out of the our parking lot and another right turn at the stop sign, which will lead to higher ground. Continue down Benham Lane to Hwy 101, turn left, and proceed to the Harbor shopping Center and wait. Do not return until the “All Clear” is given by local authorities. Please note that although there have been only two distant tsunamis in more than 50 years to cause any damage on the Oregon coast, it is always wise to evacuate when ordered. The tsunami generated by an Alaskan earthquake on Good Friday in 1964 caused extensive damage in the Brookings area, and the loss of a dozen lives only a few miles away in Northern California.
THE SECOND TYPE OF TSUNAMI IS CALLED A LOCAL TSUNAMI, and is the more destructive of the two. This tsunami will be created by a large earthquake occurring just off the coast beneath the floor of ocean. Usually the first wave from this type of tsunami will come ashore only minutes after the earthquake occurs. The first sign of one will be the shaking of a large earthquake that can last for up to two minutes. You may see rapidly rising or falling coastal water levels.
If you feel an earthquake:
- Protect yourself until the earthquake is over.
- A tsunami may be coming in a few minutes. More waves may be coming for several hours after the first one.
- Move quickly inland to high ground and away from low-lying coastal areas. Go on foot if at all possible — it is likely that the roads will be damaged.
- Do not wait for an official warning or siren. Do not pack or delay. Never stay near shore to watch a tsunami come in. Tsunamis move faster than a person can run.
- Do not return to shore. Often the first wave is not the largest, nor the one that causes the most damage. Be aware that the danger from a tsunami can last up to 12 hours after the arrival of the first wave.
- Wait for an “All Clear” from local officials before returning to low-lying areas.
The last local tsunami in this area occurred in the early 1700s. Geologists believe that these events occur every 300 to 500 years on our coast. We are now in the time frame where this kind of event can happen tomorrow, or in 200 years.
No one can predict when these events will occur, but we at Beachfront Inn want our guests to be aware of these rare events. If you are not comfortable staying with us, we understand and you are under no obligation to stay. Just let us know if you are checking out.
Tsunami information map can be found HERE.
