History
The Mendocino Hotel, first constructed as The Central is the only surviving Hotel from a time when Mendocino was a booming port for the logging trade. The original structure of the Hotel, dating to 1878, remains today and encompasses the lobby, lobby bar, dining room, kitchen and upstairs rooms.
The Hotel speaks volumes about the town and its history. Originally, it opened as The Temperance House, and was considered to be the one and only “bastion of good Christian morals” when the township burgeoned with 20,000 people, predominantly loggers. Mendocino was reportedly home to 19 saloons during the logging industry’s heyday, with a plethora of pool halls and ‘fast houses.’
Early settlers from New England and Nova Scotia sailed around Cape Horn to find the western coastal wilderness already populated with Indians, Chinese and rough loggers. They built their homes and eventually brought their wives to the region. Thanks to these early settlers many of the buildings in Mendocino bear striking architectural resemblance to the houses, shops and church steeples of small New England towns.
In 1975, R.O. Peterson purchased then remodeled the run-down hotel and retained a cadre of designers, local artisans and craftsmen to restore its authenticity. He gave them carte blanche to purchase antiques and furnishings to create the Hotel’s ambience. Approximately 90% of all the pieces date to the late 19th century. The remaining 10% represent items commissioned specifically for the Hotel.
When the dining room was designed, many special items were added to give it a warm, welcoming, atmosphere: wallpaper designed by Schumacher, a rug custom designed and woven to simulate an authentic piece from the era, period mirrors, ceramics, original oil paintings, and an enormous sideboard purchased in England, and a 1920’s coffee machine. Of special note are the glass screen/room dividers. The crests of the British towns were placed in walls dividing first and second class passengers in British railway stations in the late 19th century. Mr. Peterson purchased the crests, had them shipped to Mendocino and the wooden frames were built locally to house these beautiful glass pieces. Other screens in the room that have decorative glass in them are also original pieces, although older than the crests.
A beautifully-carved oak antique bar was moved in during the remodeling and is illuminated by the stained glass dome measuring 6 x 9 feet.
Mendocino’s pioneering families have provided photographs so that each Suite presents the history of a Mendocino founder. A carefully-tendered Victorian garden with dozens of rare roses and other plants from the 1880’s, some original and some newly planted, surround these suites.
The Garden Suites are comprised of some new and some very old. William Heeser bought the land in 1852 and built the house land then sold it to William Kelley in 1854. Now it’s known as Heeser House (rooms 301, 302, & 303) was originally built from this house.
The Mendocino Hotel offers 51 rooms and suites ranging in price from $95 to $425. Breakfast, lunch and dinner plus room service are offered with local wines and fine cuisine utilizing local fresh vegetables, fish, and seafood. The hotel also features its own bakery where delicious breads and pastries are prepared daily.
The historic village of Mendocino nestles between the California headlands and Highway One just 150 miles north of San Francisco. Its ethereal and sometimes tumultuous climate comes with the full blow of Alaska storms with and summer fog filling fields and gullies much like Scottish highlands, giving it a dreamy if haunting and ghostly appearance.
Ghosts, you say? Rumor has it, much as in the inns and castles of England, that the Hotel has its own ghost, a Victorian lady who haunts tables number six and eight in the dining room. She has been seen in one of the lobby mirrors and front desk personnel report that sometimes in the middle of the night their name is spoken behind them but no one is there….
To reach the Mendocino Hotel, plan on a 3 ½ hour drive from the San Francisco Airport, or a 2 ½ hour drive from the Santa Rosa Airport. From Santa Rosa, stay on Highway 101 to Cloverdale, then turn West on Highway 128 which wanders through beautiful Anderson Valley. There are several wineries along the way which offer wine tasting, and the scenery is breathtaking as you meander through the last 13 miles of tall redwoods before you reach the ocean. Then head north on Highway One 10 miles to Mendocino.
The Mendocino Hotel is listed in the AAA and the Mobil Travel Guides. Credit cards, Gift Cards and checks are welcomed. Weekday rates are available, Sunday through Thursday, excluding holidays.

Safety & Security
Traveler Safety
- Do not admit anyone into your room without first verifying his or her identity. All doors are provided with peep holes. If you are unsure of someone claiming to be a hotel employee, call the Front Desk for verification before allowing entry.
- Hotel staff members will never call your room and ask for credit card numbers or other sensitive information. Please notify the Front Desk if you receive such a call.
- Do not leave cash or other valuables in your room or vehicle. Mendocino Hotel provides safe access in the office for your security.
- Always use all locking devices on the door. Before leaving your room, double check that windows and door are all securely locked.
- Keep your room key with you at all times. Do not leave it unattended in your room or elsewhere.
- Report any suspicious activity that you observe to the management.
Fire Safety
- Upon checking in, locate the 2 nearest exits and the nearest fire alarm. Count the number of doors between them and your room, so that you can find your way in the event of smoke or darkness.
- If you hear an alarm or smell smoke, act immediately; don’t just investigate.
- To report a fire, dial 9, wait for a dial tone, then dial 911. Be sure to give your room number. Next, call the Front Desk by dialing 0. Then go to the door. If it is hot, do not open it. Turn off the fan or heaters. Cover the crack at the bottom of the door with wet towels, fill your bathtub with water, and signal from your window. Do not break the window or jump from it. Cover your mouth and nose with a folded wet towel. Wait to be rescued.
- If the door is not hot, and there is no dense smoke in the corridor, take your room key, lock the door behind you and head for the nearest exit. Pull nearest fire alarm if possible. If there is some smoke, crawl; the freshest air is near the floor. Proceed quickly but calmly. Do not panic.
Earthquake Safety
If you feel any shaking:
- Drop, cover and hold on: drop down to the floor as soon as you perceive an earthquake has started; drop down before the earthquake drops you down. Then seek shelter under a desk or table. Crouch down on your knees so that you can move with the table. Hold on to the table leg(s) so you can keep the table over you.
- If there is no nearby desk or table, sit on the floor against an inside wall, away from windows, tall furniture or bookcases. Draw up your knees, bend your head toward your knees. Protect your head and neck with your arms.
- Go outside once the shaking stops. Make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes before leaving the building. If possible take valuables and medications. Avoid touching downed power lines. If access to exit doors is blocked by earthquake damage, wait for a rescue team.
Tsunami Safety
If you are at the beach or near the ocean and you feel the ground shake or see rapidly rising or falling coastal water levels, move immediately to higher ground and stay there until local authorities say it is safe to return. DO NOT wait for a warning to be announced. If the tsunami is caused by a remote earthquake or volcanic eruption, you will be alerted by a siren, radio or television broadcasts, local first responders and/or an alarm at the hotel.
Often the first wave may not be the largest. The danger from a tsunami can last up to 12 hours after the arrival of the first wave. Tsunamis move faster than a person can run, and can be 30 feet high or higher; sometimes much higher. Never stay near shore to watch a tsunami come in. Never turn your back on the ocean.
